Case Studies

Norwood House

Repair of Grade 1 Listed Georgian house in very poor condition, conversion to office use by international aeronautics firm and design of annexes within the grounds.

59 Market Place Beverley

This 18c shop, Listed grade 2 and in the heart of the Beverley Conservation Area, originally had residential accommodation on the upper floors but these had been used as workshops for an ironmonger’s business for over 100 years. The challenge was to repair these upper floors and bring them back into viable use as apartments while preserving the features of the building that made it special. I advised on appropriate repairs and alterations and prepared the Heritage Appraisal supporting the applications for Listed Building Consent and Planning Permission. Consent was granted and the upper floors are being converted to 3 desirable flats.

The Grange, Bewholme

The owner of redundant farm buildings in the Bewholme Conservation Area in Holderness wished to convert them to holiday accommodation but had experienced planning problems. After researching the history of the buildings and understanding their significance within the history of agriculture in this conservation area, I was able to suggest amendments to the design and write a Heritage Appraisal to submit with the planning application. Permission has now been granted and repairs and conversion works are about to begin.

St Matthews, Anlaby Road Hull

St Matthew’s Church, a Grade II listed Anglican church in inner-city Hull, faced dereliction due to structural damage and damp but held strong local significance, including a WWI memorial window. Community charity Giroscope acquired it to repair and convert it for community and business use. I advised on repairs and alterations, prepared the Heritage Appraisal for consent applications, and sourced a specialist organ report. The building now supports small businesses, community groups and training, with the memorial window restored and solar panels helping power the building.

The National Picture Theatre

Grade 2 Listed remains of a cinema bombed during WW2, preserved and interpreted by the Local Authority with the help of National Lottery Heritage Funds. With this project I acted more as a client than a consultant in my role as a volunteer Trustee of a preservation and education charity, working with the Local Authority.
